Today marks India’s 71st Independence Day since it was declared a sovereign nation on August 15, 1947.
Around the turn of the 20th century, the first members of Canada’s South Asian community arrived right here in Vancouver, and since then, they have played an integral part in the development of our city. Historically, many settled in Vancouver South when they immigrated to Canada, and that rich, cultural legacy is visible throughout our riding. Today, Greater Vancouver is home to over 250,000 ethnic Indo-Canadians.
As an immigrant from India myself, this day has personal significance for me. Canada and India have much in common, but most importantly, we recognize that diversity is a strength, and something that we should be very proud of. I encourage you to take this day to reflect upon the contributions that Indo-Canadians have made and continue to make to our community and country. Please read the Prime Minister’s statement here.
