Today, the First Nations Health Council (FNHC) and Hon. Carolyn Bennett, Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada, gathered in Coast Salish Territory, Vancouver to mark the signing of a recent agreement intended to improve the lives of Indigenous children, youth, and families in B.C.
The signed Memorandum of Understanding signifies the intention to create an environment of partnership, commitment and inclusivity between First Nations communities the Government of Canada. First Nations communities can now engage directly on matters of funding, policy, and how to improve child and family services. This will allow First Nations communities to lead and shape the way these programs are designed and implemented in the future.
This agreement will prioritize the health and well-being of First Nations children, families and communities in B.C. and across Canada. The process of reconciliation between Canada and Indigenous peoples is crucial and this agreement demonstrates this government`s commitment to ensuring First Nations children are protected and have the resources needed to achieve their fullest potential.
