First responders are crucial to the protection and safety of Canadians. To honour their role, our government has introduced the Memorial Grant Program for First Responders.
When firefighters, police, and paramedics put their personal safety on the line, they are doing a service to all Canadians. In recognition for the critical role that first responders play, the Memorial Grant Program for First Responders will provide one lump sum, tax-free direct payment of maximum $300 000 to the families of first responders who have died as a result of their duties.
The Memorial Grant is non-economic and does not compensate the families of first responders for their loss or serve as life insurance. Rather, it is a recognition of their service and sacrifice.
